Hi, Tom, I couldn't find a way to send you an email, and this comment isn't really about this blog post. I enjoy your podcast, you do a great job of explaining your views, and I take away either some knowledge or something to think more deeply over. I was listening to a caller taking issue with you over your comment about how parents who send their kids to public schools don't love them. I agree with him, and here's why. Parents are raising their children to participate in society, not just to get out into it. My husband and I could afford to send our kids to private school. There wouldnt' be much left over but we could do it. There is no private school in our town. There is one in the next town, 20 miles away, and they have a shuttle service. It's a good school, and I have friends who send their children there, and if we lived in the town they live in, I'd do the same. Our schools are good. Not perfect, but definitely safe. I have found the staff and faculty to be responsive and communicative. Of course, we live in the deep South, so we have Christmas break, not winter break. The private school that my friends' kids go to is not without its own issues. As you said, and as your caller said, you cannot simply dump your kids off at ANY school and never take part in their education and think you're "raising" them. Part of growing up is learning that there are things you see every day that are just plain wrong, and that you have to choose what you can or should do about it, and how things affect you. Our kids are also active in their church youth group; Boy Scouts; and baseball both spring and fall. They are expected to become Eagle Scouts. They both earned the highest Cub Scout award possible. Both are in Honor Society (one is Elementary Honor Society, the other in Junior Honor Society). They are expected to earn the milestone awards in church that indicate that they are making spiritual progress, involving learning, teaching, and serving. Regardless of which school they went to, I would still want them in these programs, because no school can provide the other experiences that they need to become well-rounded men. They help prepare, plant, nurture, and harvest the garden. My 13-year-old is learning to drive a stick shift because we live on a large piece of land and he will eventually need to learn to drive a tractor. Even going to church is not enough to ensure that they are learning the lessons that will give them the tools to face the moral issues that are prevalent in our society, we try to make sure that we are grabbing teaching moments whenever they arise. We have a long way to go on some things; but the displacement in our life that would be required to get them to private school for the same level of education they are getting would cause us to not be able to provide the other experiences that are adding great value to their lives. Something would have to give, either scouts or sports, for no advantage in academics. Additionally, when something inappropriate occurs at school, they are not afraid to discuss it with us, and we can use it as a teaching moment, they get the chance, under the umbrella of a safe environment, to learn about choices and consequences, to learn critical thinking about moral issues, to have these things come up in real-life situations and hear what their friends say and then to hear us tell our view from our experiences. We are not raising kids to go out into the 1970's. The skills and tools they need are quite different from the ones we needed, and even then we were probably not adequately prepared; I don't think it is possible to enter adulthood adequately prepared. I know my kids are kids, i know they don't tell me everything that goes on. But there's also not a lot they can hide for very long, and they know that. The other thing you need to remember is that for every union jerk in public schools, there are a lot of very dedicated teachers who often have to skirt the rules to do the right thing. They're fighting a similar battle, they have to be babysitters to kids whose parents don't care, and so they do the best they can. I feel that as long as my kids are making academic progress that matches the national standards, and I can supplement it with other activities, they are serving well if they can be a light and a standard bearer to other kids.

Thanks for the response. Men can and do argue over what is right and wrong, but reality dominates in the end. We as a nation are broke. Money is a simple means of value transfer. Take money out of the equation, and we have people that work, producing real goods and services, and people sitting around producing nothing, living off of the pile of stuff that has been produced. Man\'s broken system has ended up idling too many hands leaving too many people sitting around consuming yet producing nothing. This is the reality, and reality dominates in the end.

I make simple observations, not arguments. We are here as individuals to experience where sin leads. We are born in sin, meaning we are born with a bit of a distance between us and the identity that God offers. Every creature in this world but man has it\'s natural identity, but they are slaves of those identities. Man is free to choose. In a sense we as human beings are born with the wrong identity because our ancestors made the wrong identity choice. Salvation consists of us as individuals genuinely realizing where sin leads and crying out to God to save us from the wrong choice.

We play god in our own minds by judging, or resenting, literally a \"puffing up\" of the ego. We attempt to murder in our minds by hurling mental thunderbolts. This resentment/judgement process literally separates us from the individual unique identity that God offers us. The next step towards self-degredation is to start making excuses to Conscience for judgement, and to try to become proud of the resulting externalized identities. Thus, we end up with various sorts of \"pride\" marches -- for example, a \"pride\" march to show \"pride\" in killing babies via abortion.

Group identities result from commonly shared resentments. People who resent work end up in labor unions.

The more separated we are from reality, the more absurd and dysfunctional we become.

The only hope one has of seeing these things for oneself is to give up judgement/resentment. At that point the individual man or woman can see these things for themselves. In the end, individuals must see these things for themselves. Taking someone else\'s word for anything is ultimately meaningless.

The entire point of our existence revolves around us as individuals being able to find the truth. We aren\'t here to pleasure ourselves or have maximum prosperity, nor are we here to lie to each other as a means of bolstering each other\'s excuses. There are no mechanical man-made rules that guarantee salvation.

If you continue to listen perhaps you can begin to understand where I\'m coming from.

Tom, I may be on the wrong podcast episode but I have to question your support of governor walker in Wisconsin. He violated the public employees contract by increasing their pension and health cost. I am not saying they do not need to be cut but how would you like to find out in the middle of your next trip that you now have to pay for something you agreed with your boss that he would pay for? Is going back on a contract moral? He should have waited until the current contract expired and took a stand on the increased cost at that time.

I also don’t understand you or your speaker’s idea on how God has abandoned America. When was God ever on any nation’s side since Israel in olden time. Who does He favor in war? What does a nation have to do with an individual’s salvation? God doesn’t care about nations he cares about individuals. Jesus preached that we are not of this world. He sent his disciples to all the earth; this alone is sufficient enough to prove that he didn’t favor one nation over another. Did Jesus rail against Rome? Jesus’ message is a Gospel of salvation of the individual through Him. Name one nation that flourished because it was a Godly nation …..Name one Godly nation. America has been denying God since it was created. You had as many atheists as God fearing men create this country. They even denied Him in the Treaty of Tripoli in 1797

Jesus’ Gospel is not a health and wealth Gospel. There is no guarantee of prosperity. You disparaged all of the poor saints of this world; is their faith not good enough? Is that why they are poor? I don’t think so. Religion plays no role in who is rich or not and many rich people are the scum of the earth.

In Christ

Why are you so angry? Is your anger and slurry of foul words going to convince me of anything other than your apparent lack of stability?

Calm down. Why are you so threatened?

If something as trivial as this upsets you to this degree, then what's going to happen when we hit $7 or higher gasoline prices, you lose your job and can barely feed yourself?

Hi Tom - Unfortunately I only got to watch 3 parts & they pulled the videos from YouTube:-( The documentary is listed on Netflix but not yet available, I put it in my que anyway. I think anyone who watched any TV whatsoever should be required to watch this so they dont fall into the marketing trap!

I agree, America is in great danger and has been for some time. It's easy to blame people like Obama, but the real problem is moral/cultural decay/rot that has infected our country like an invading fungal blight. I believe one of the biggest problems that has lead to the precarious position in which we find ourselves is a large percentage of children born outside of marriage and in many cases not knowing who the Dad is. Kids born into that sort of environment are far more suggestible, and are therefore more easily scammed by lying politicians -- dangerous enemies begin to look like friends, and friends like enemies. Even if we turn things around in the short term we've still got the major problem of over 50% of all kids born in America being born outside of marriage. Those kids are fodder for a future dictatorship. Their parents threw their kids futures away for a few seconds' worth of pleasure.

Speaking of that are you going to ever do more "sound seeing" tours on the podcast? I kind of miss those:-) Going to build a "crystal radio" with my 5 year old today, should be interesting....

Lots of of bloggers are not really pleased with the new iPad.There was too much hoopla about it and alot blogers got turned off.Thing is, I actually see lots of the awesome potential of the gizmo. Third-party apps for composing tunes, games, newspapers and magazine and books, all kinds of good stuff, but IMHO they just didn't really sell it properly (excluding the books). It looks kind of incomplete
